The Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) has called for stronger tourism institutions, strategic partnerships, and innovation to unlock Nigeria’s vast tourism potential and position the country among the world’s leading travel destinations.

The call was made by NATOP National President, Hajia Bolaji Mustapha, during the association’s 10th Annual General Meeting (AGM), held under the theme, “Unlocking Nigeria’s Tourism Potential: Strengthening Tour Operators for Sustainable Destination Development.”
Mustapha said Nigeria possesses abundant tourism assets, including breathtaking natural attractions, vibrant cultures, rich history, and diverse experiences capable of attracting visitors from across the globe.
She, however, stressed that showcasing these attractions alone would not be enough to grow the sector.
“Unlocking these potentials requires more than showcasing our assets. It demands stronger institutions, empowered tour operators, strategic partnerships, innovation, and a collective commitment to sustainable destination development,” she said.
The NATOP President commended members of the association for their dedication and sacrifices in building a stronger organization despite challenges facing the industry.
She noted that the continued growth of NATOP demonstrates the resilience and commitment of tourism stakeholders who believe in the enormous opportunities within Nigeria’s tourism sector.
According to her, tour operators play a much bigger role than simply organizing travel packages.
“We are more than service providers; we are storytellers, destination ambassadors, and drivers of economic growth,” Mustapha said.
She explained that every destination promoted and every visitor welcomed contributes to job creation, community development, cultural preservation, and national prosperity.
Mustapha therefore urged members to use the AGM as an opportunity to exchange ideas, build new partnerships, and develop practical solutions that will strengthen the industry while preserving Nigeria’s rich cultural and environmental heritage.
Leadership Commended
Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of NATOP and immediate past President of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), Mr. Nkereuwem Onung, praised the achievements of the current administration under Hajia Mustapha.
According to him, the association has recorded significant progress over the past two years.
He highlighted the successful rebranding of NATOP, the launch of a modern website, and the introduction of the NATOP Tourism Passport as key milestones.
Onung also commended the introduction of the Unified Identity Card Scheme for registered tour operators, describing it as an important step toward eliminating quackery and improving professionalism within the industry.
Air Peace Chairman Seeks Greater Collaboration
Chairman of Air Peace, Dr. Allen Onyema, called for stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors to drive tourism development in Nigeria.
He urged NATOP members to champion partnerships capable of unlocking the country’s largely untapped tourism potential.
Onyema also encouraged tourism stakeholders to embrace Nigeria’s cultural diversity as an advantage rather than a source of division.
According to him, greater involvement in national heritage institutions and stronger cooperation among stakeholders would help transform tourism into a major contributor to the country’s economy.
New Website and Tourism Passport Unveiled
One of the highlights of the AGM was the unveiling of NATOP’s newly redesigned website, aimed at strengthening the association’s digital presence and promoting Nigerian tourism globally.
The association also launched the NATOP Tourism Passport, a publication featuring tourist attractions across Nigeria alongside a directory of verified tour operators to help promote credible tourism services.
The initiatives are expected to improve destination marketing, enhance visitor confidence, and further support the growth of Nigeria’s tourism industry.
