Ireland’s Leona Maguire has been selected to represent Europe at the 2026 Solheim Cup after receiving one of four captain’s picks from European team captain Anna Nordqvist.
The selection will give Maguire her fourth appearance in the prestigious biennial women’s golf competition, despite a challenging run of form in recent tournaments.
Nordqvist named Maguire alongside three debutants — Spain’s Julia Lopez Ramirez, England’s Mimi Rhodes and France’s Nastasia Nadaud — to complete Europe’s 12-player squad for the upcoming contest against the United States.
Maguire’s selection comes after she narrowly missed out on automatic qualification. However, her experience and impressive record in match play were key factors in Nordqvist’s decision to include the Irish golfer in the team.
The 31-year-old has earned 8.5 points from 12 Solheim Cup matches throughout her career, demonstrating her ability to perform in the unique team environment. Her experience is expected to be valuable as Europe attempts to regain the trophy after the United States won the 2024 contest.
The 2026 Solheim Cup will be held from September 11 to 13 at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands. Europe will be hoping to maintain its strong record on home soil, having not lost a Solheim Cup hosted in Europe since 2015.
For Maguire, the selection provides another opportunity to compete at one of the most important events in women’s golf. Her previous Solheim Cup appearances have established her as an experienced member of the European team, and her familiarity with the competition could prove important against a strong American side.
The inclusion of three rookies also signals a blend of experience and emerging talent in Nordqvist’s squad. Lopez Ramirez, Rhodes and Nadaud will all make their Solheim Cup debuts, bringing fresh energy to a European team that will be determined to reclaim the trophy.
The eight players who qualified automatically include several established names as well as rising stars. England’s Lottie Woad, who has enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season, is among the newcomers to the European team.
