Lagos State Governor Launches “Eko Cares” Initiative to Alleviate Economic Hardship

In a bid to alleviate the economic burden faced by residents amidst ongoing challenges, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, unveiled the “Eko Cares” Initiative on Wednesday. The social intervention program aims to provide support to vulnerable households across the state.

The inaugural program targets no fewer than 500,000 households spread across 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs). Notable dignitaries including Deputy Governor Dr. Femi Hamzat, Chief of Staff Tayo Ayinde, Head of Service Bode Agoro, members of the State Executive Council, religious and traditional leaders, as well as community representatives, graced the launch event held at Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja.

Under the initiative, vulnerable households will receive essential food items including 10kg of rice, 5kg of garri, 5kg of beans, and tomatoes, among others. These provisions aim to address immediate nutritional needs and ease the financial strain faced by residents.

Governor Sanwo-Olu established a non-partisan Special Dispensation Advisory Council comprised of eminent Nigerians, including rights activists, religious leaders, youth representatives, and opposition party leaders, to oversee the initiative’s implementation. The committee, chaired by Governor Sanwo-Olu with Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat as an alternate chairman, will drive efforts to ensure effective execution and inclusivity.

Speaking at the event, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, hailed the launch of “Eko Cares” as a significant milestone in Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration. He emphasized the government’s commitment to fulfilling promises made to the people and highlighted the initiative’s comprehensive approach to addressing socio-economic challenges.

Omotoso highlighted the success of the “Ounje Eko” program, which offers discounted food items to residents, as part of the broader “Eko Cares” initiative. He noted the positive feedback from beneficiaries, commending the government’s empathy and thoughtfulness in addressing the needs of vulnerable citizens.

The commissioner underscored the importance of collaboration with the Special Dispensation Advisory Committee on Social Interventions (SPEDAC) in overseeing the implementation of “Eko Cares.” He praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for his leadership and commitment to improving the lives of Lagosians amid economic hardships.

Omotoso expressed gratitude to the governor for initiatives aimed at easing transportation costs, providing free medical benefits, and supporting agriculture in the state. He affirmed the government’s dedication to ensuring the well-being of all residents and thanked Governor Sanwo-Olu for his steadfast empathy and determination.
