Johannesburg has been ranked the eighth-best city in the world for street food in Time Out’s 2026 global rankings, placing the South African city among some of the world’s most celebrated food destinations.
The ranking puts Johannesburg alongside Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta, while placing it ahead of Bangkok and Mumbai.
The city’s strong position reflects its deeply rooted street food culture, which can be found across taxi ranks, township corners and neighbourhood takeaways.
One of Johannesburg’s standout street foods is the kota, a quarter-loaf sandwich that is hollowed out and packed with ingredients such as chips, polony and sauce. Amanda’s eatery in Soweto was highlighted for its take on the popular local dish.
Food trucks are also contributing to Johannesburg’s growing street food reputation. The Hot Pot Kitchen in Midrand has attracted attention for its use of indigenous ingredients, including grilled mala and masonja.
The city’s street food scene reflects the influence of its diverse communities and the many culinary traditions that have shaped Johannesburg over the years.
The international recognition also comes as travellers increasingly seek authentic local experiences, with street food offering visitors an accessible way to experience a city’s culture, traditions and everyday life.
