Brazilian tennis star João Fonseca has withdrawn from the upcoming Asian swing of the ATP Tour, choosing to take additional time to recover from an abdominal injury that has disrupted his 2026 season.
The 20-year-old, currently ranked No. 28 in the world, will miss the ATP 500 tournament in Tokyo and the Shanghai Masters, which are scheduled to take place in the coming weeks.
Fonseca made the announcement after recently returning to action for Brazil in the Davis Cup. He helped his country defeat Switzerland, beating Dominic Stricker in his singles match.
However, the Brazilian said he still needed more time to fully recover after a season affected by several physical setbacks.
According to Fonseca, he discussed the situation extensively with his team before deciding to step away from competition temporarily. He said the decision was made to listen to the signals from his body and give himself additional time to recover physically and mentally.
The decision follows an abdominal problem that forced Fonseca to withdraw from the Cincinnati Masters and subsequently miss the US Open. He had also dealt with other physical problems during the season, including back, shoulder and wrist issues.
Despite the setbacks, Fonseca has produced several notable performances during the year. He reached the quarter-finals of the French Open and recorded a major victory over Novak Djokovic during his run in Paris.
His return at the Davis Cup showed his determination to represent Brazil, but he acknowledged afterward that he was not yet fully fit.
Fonseca is expected to target a return during the European indoor season. He remains on the provisional schedule for the ATP 500 event in Basel, which begins on October 26, where he is the defending champion, as well as the Paris Masters in November.
The young Brazilian has not announced a specific date for his return to competitive tennis.
