World number one Jannik Sinner delivered another commanding performance on Sunday, defeating Norway’s Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4 to win the Italian Open and extend his unprecedented run of dominance on the ATP Tour.

The victory secured Sinner’s sixth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title, further cementing his status as the leading force in men’s tennis.

With the win at the Foro Italico, Sinner also completed the rare “Golden Masters” achievement, having now claimed all nine ATP Masters 1000 events across his career. Only Novak Djokovic had previously achieved the feat.

Sinner’s triumph marks the first time an Italian has won the Italian Open since Adriano Panatta 50 years ago, sparking celebrations among home fans in Rome.

The 23-year-old now carries a 29-match winning streak into Roland Garros, with an even longer 34-match unbeaten run in Masters 1000 events — both records in the modern era.

Despite Ruud’s reputation as one of the strongest clay-court players on the ATP Tour, Sinner maintained control throughout the match. Ruud, who had never taken a set from Sinner in their previous encounters, briefly started strongly but was quickly neutralised as the Italian broke back and seized momentum.

Sinner broke early in the second set, effectively sealing the outcome before cruising to victory in front of a packed Centre Court crowd.

The result adds to what has been a dominant season for Sinner, who now heads into the French Open as one of the clear favourites to claim his first Grand Slam title on the Paris clay.

Ruud, meanwhile, entered the final with strong clay-court credentials, having been one of the most successful players on the surface since 2020, but was unable to overcome Sinner’s pace and precision.

In the doubles final, Italy also celebrated further success as Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori defeated Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos 7-6 (10-8), 6-7 (3-7), 10-3 to claim the men’s doubles title.

The Italian Open victory continues Sinner’s rise as the dominant figure in men’s tennis, with expectations now building around a potential breakthrough at Roland Garros.
