Imo State is set to record a major milestone in Nigeria’s healthcare sector as the Imo State Specialist Hospital in Owerri prepares to conduct its first robotic-assisted surgery today, Friday, August 21, 2026.

The procedure is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. at the Imo Robotics and Oncology Centre (IROC) within the Specialist Hospital in Umuguma, Owerri West Local Government Area.

The development is part of Governor Hope Uzodimma’s broader strategy to expand access to specialised healthcare and reduce medical tourism by providing advanced treatment within Nigeria.

International Expertise

The procedure is expected to be led by Professor Kingsley Ekwueme, a consultant robotic and laparoscopic surgeon and lead urological surgeon at Glan Clwyd Hospital in the United Kingdom.

Ekwueme is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and has been recognised for his expertise in robotic and minimally invasive surgery.

Medical specialists from the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States are also reported to have arrived in Imo in connection with the initiative.

The involvement of international specialists is intended not only to facilitate the procedure but also to promote knowledge transfer and strengthen the skills of Nigerian healthcare professionals.

Tackling Medical Tourism

Governor Uzodimma has described the investment as part of efforts to reduce the financial and emotional burden associated with Nigerians travelling abroad for specialised treatment.

The state says advanced medical infrastructure must be matched with competent professionals. Consequently, partnerships with international specialists are expected to help develop local expertise alongside the deployment of sophisticated equipment.

The IROC combines robotic surgical capabilities with oncology services, with the stated objective of improving the diagnosis and treatment of cancers, urological conditions and other complex diseases.

A Potential Healthcare Turning Point

The initiative could represent an important development for specialised healthcare in southeastern Nigeria.

Robotic-assisted surgery can provide surgeons with enhanced precision and enable minimally invasive procedures in appropriate cases. However, the long-term value of the project will depend not only on the availability of the equipment but also on maintenance, specialist training, affordability and consistent access for patients.

The immediate procedure is therefore being watched as a test of Imo’s ambition to establish itself as a centre for advanced medical care.

For Nigeria’s healthcare system, the wider significance is the possibility of retaining more specialised medical services within the country, strengthening local expertise and reducing the need for patients to seek certain treatments overseas.
