The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening discipline and improving operational efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, announced the development in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja.
According to him, the restructuring is designed to refocus the unit on its core mandate while enhancing oversight across police commands, formations and departments nationwide.
He explained that the revamped framework will prioritise proactive monitoring, intelligence-driven inspections and real-time supervision of personnel and operations across the force.
“The restructured framework also harmonises key investigative and monitoring functions in line with the force’s reform agenda,” Placid said.
He added that the initiative is aimed at promoting professionalism, discipline and accountability across all levels of the police structure.
Under the new arrangement, the Monitoring Unit will play a central role in identifying operational lapses, enforcing standards and ensuring compliance with established procedures within the force.
As part of the restructuring, the Inspector-General approved a leadership transition, appointing Deputy Commissioner of Police Aliyu Abubakar as the new head of the unit.
Abubakar previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State.
He is noted for his involvement in high-profile investigations and for working with state authorities to improve investigative methods and strengthen operational effectiveness.
The Nigeria Police Force said the reform is part of broader efforts to modernise its operations and enhance internal accountability mechanisms.
Officials believe the restructuring will improve supervision, reduce misconduct and ensure better service delivery to the public.
