Guinea’s President Mamadi Doumbouya has left the country for a family trip to Greece, in what the presidency described as the first officially announced annual leave by a sitting head of state in the country.

Doumbouya departed Conakry on Monday and was seen off at the airport by Prime Minister, senior military commanders, government officials and diplomats.

According to the presidency, the break follows years of intensive state management and is intended to promote transparency within the government.

Authorities assured citizens that government operations and institutional activities would continue as normal during the president’s absence.

Before Doumbouya’s departure, the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces issued a statement aimed at addressing possible speculation surrounding the president’s trip.

The military chief reaffirmed that the armed forces would maintain stability and protect Guinea’s territorial integrity, while warning citizens against misinformation circulating online during the president’s absence.

The statement further highlighted the military’s continued influence in Guinea’s political landscape since September 2021, when special forces led by Doumbouya overthrew former President Alpha Condé.

Doumbouya, who came to power through the military takeover, has remained a central figure in Guinea’s transition process as the country continues efforts toward political reforms and a return to civilian rule.
