Goldman Sachs Beats Third-Quarter Profit Forecasts on Strong Equities Trading

Strong equities trading and higher investment-banking fees helped the Wall Street firm deliver better-than-expected quarterly earnings.

Goldman Sachs has exceeded analysts’ expectations for third-quarter profit, supported by strong equities trading and improved revenue from investment-banking services.

The financial institution announced on October 13 that net earnings reached $5.29 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2026. Diluted earnings per share stood at $17.01, while total net revenue climbed to $18.68 billion.

Reuters reported that the bank’s earnings per share exceeded the $13.02 forecast cited by analysts, demonstrating the strength of its performance during a period of uncertainty in financial markets.

The results provide a contrast with JPMorgan Chase, which reported earnings below expectations on the same day. The difference highlights how individual banks can experience different outcomes depending on their business models and exposure to market activity.

Goldman Sachs has substantial operations in trading, investment banking and asset management. These activities can benefit when clients trade actively, raise capital or seek advice on large financial transactions.

Equities trading drives performance

One of the most significant contributors to Goldman’s quarterly results was its equities business.

Reuters reported that equities trading revenue increased by 72% year over year to $6.44 billion.

Equities trading involves buying and selling shares and related financial instruments on behalf of clients or through a firm’s market-making activities. Revenue can increase when market volatility encourages investors to adjust their portfolios or when clients require more assistance executing transactions.

The third quarter saw uncertainty in financial markets linked to interest-rate expectations, rising energy costs and changes in technology-stock valuations.

Such conditions can lead institutional investors to rebalance their portfolios, hedge risks or seek new investment opportunities.

For a bank with a large trading operation, increased client activity can generate higher revenue. However, trading also involves risk, and favourable results in one quarter do not guarantee that the same performance will continue.

The bank must manage market exposures, liquidity and counterparty risk while responding to changing client demand.

Investment banking provides additional support

Goldman’s investment-banking division also contributed to the stronger results.

Reuters reported that investment-banking fees rose by 21% year over year to $3.22 billion. The increase reflected demand for services associated with debt and equity underwriting, mergers and acquisitions, and other corporate transactions.

Investment banks advise companies on raising capital, buying or selling businesses and restructuring their finances. They may earn fees for arranging share offerings, issuing bonds or providing advice on major transactions.

When corporate confidence improves, businesses may be more willing to pursue acquisitions, raise funds or make strategic investments.

The relationship is not always straightforward, however. Higher interest rates can make borrowing more expensive, while uncertainty can delay transactions. Banks therefore depend on a combination of market conditions, client confidence and the availability of financing.

Goldman’s reported results suggest that investment-banking activity remained sufficiently strong during the quarter to support revenue, despite challenges elsewhere in the sector.

Other divisions contribute to revenue

Goldman’s asset and wealth management operations also played a role in its overall performance.

These businesses provide services to institutions, companies and individuals seeking investment management, financial planning and related products.

Revenue from such activities can depend on the value of assets under management, client inflows, transaction activity and the mix of services provided.

Diversification across trading, investment banking and asset management can help financial institutions avoid relying entirely on one source of income.

Nevertheless, each division faces its own risks. Trading can be volatile, corporate transactions can slow, and investment-management fees can be affected by declining asset values or client withdrawals.

Goldman’s overall performance therefore reflects the combined effect of several business lines rather than one isolated source of revenue.

What the results say about financial markets

The earnings report offers a snapshot of activity across the global financial system.

Strong equities trading may indicate that institutional investors were actively adjusting their portfolios during a period of market uncertainty. Higher investment-banking fees suggest that at least some corporate clients continued to pursue financing and advisory transactions.

However, the figures do not mean that all financial markets or businesses performed strongly. Other institutions may have different exposures, and conditions can vary substantially across asset classes.

Goldman’s lower revenue from fixed income, currencies and commodities illustrates this uneven performance. Reuters reported that this business generated $3.47 billion, down 1% from a year earlier.

That decline suggests that strength in one division can coexist with weaker activity elsewhere.

Implications for investors

Investors will assess whether Goldman can sustain its trading momentum and maintain a healthy pipeline of corporate transactions.

A single quarter of strong performance can support confidence, but markets generally place considerable importance on future earnings and management’s outlook.

Analysts may also examine the bank’s expenses, risk management, capital position and returns to shareholders.

The reported annualised return on average common shareholders’ equity was 18.7%, according to the company’s official earnings release. This measure helps investors assess how effectively a financial institution generates profit relative to shareholders’ equity.

It is useful alongside other indicators, rather than as a standalone measure of financial strength.

Outlook for Goldman Sachs

Goldman Sachs Chairman and Chief Executive David Solomon said the bank continued to attract clients for its advisory, execution and financing services. The company also reported its second-highest quarterly net revenue and record year-to-date net revenue.

The bank nevertheless operates in an environment shaped by changing interest rates, geopolitical uncertainty and shifting investor confidence.

If trading activity remains strong and corporate clients continue to pursue transactions, Goldman could benefit from additional revenue opportunities. If markets become less active or companies delay major deals, earnings could moderate.

For now, the third-quarter figures demonstrate the value of Goldman’s trading and advisory operations during a volatile period. The next challenge will be sustaining profitability while managing the risks that accompany those activities.
