Fighting has intensified in northern Ethiopia, raising concerns about a return to the large-scale conflict that devastated the Tigray region between 2020 and 2022.
The latest fighting involves Ethiopia’s federal forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). TPLF forces and allied groups have taken control of several strategic locations, while government forces have launched operations to regain territory.
Ethiopia’s army chief has accused Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt of supporting the armed groups fighting the government. However, Sudan has rejected the accusation as baseless, while the other countries have also denied or disputed Ethiopia’s claims.
Humanitarian organisations have reported a rise in wounded people and displacement. Communications in parts of Tigray have also been disrupted, making it difficult to obtain reliable information from the region.
The renewed violence has raised concerns about the conflict spreading beyond Tigray and affecting neighbouring regions.
