The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a major Ebola outbreak, with 8,067 confirmed cases and 3,901 deathsrecorded as of September 26, according to the country’s public health authorities.
The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, has spread across seven provinces, including Ituri, North Kivu, Haut-Uélé and Bas-Uélé. Ituri remains the most affected area, with more than 6,000 confirmed cases.
Health authorities are continuing efforts to identify people who have been in contact with infected patients, isolate cases and provide treatment. However, insecurity, difficulties accessing healthcare and misinformation are making the response more difficult.
So far, 2,070 patients have recovered, while hundreds remain in isolation or hospital care.
The outbreak has now become the largest Ebola outbreak recorded in the history of the DRC by confirmed cases.
