Nigeria’s Rangers International are set for a decisive CAF Champions League encounter against Sobemap FC of Benin Republic on Friday, as the first preliminary round of Africa’s premier club competition moves into its return-leg phase.
The match is scheduled for 14:00 GMT and is one of the opening fixtures of a weekend that could eliminate several clubs from the 2026/27 continental campaign.
APR of Rwanda will also face Les Aigles du Congo on Friday, while a much larger programme follows across Saturday and Sunday.
For Rangers, the objective is to navigate the preliminary rounds and move closer to the lucrative Champions League group stage.
Africa’s Heavyweights Face Decisive Weekend
Several of the continent’s established clubs enter the weekend holding first-leg advantages.
Egypt’s Pyramids FC defeated Kenyan giants Gor Mahia 2-0 in Nairobi, putting the Egyptians firmly in control ahead of the return fixture.
Five-time African champions TP Mazembe also secured an important away victory, beating Ghana’s Medeama 1-0 through an 86th-minute goal from Lise Nyembo Ntumba.
Sudan’s Al Hilal carry a 2-0 advantage against Burundi’s Aigle Noir, while Gabon’s Mangasport take a 3-1 lead into their second leg against Namibia’s African Stars.
Elsewhere, Zamalek will attempt to complete the job against AS Port after the Egyptian giants secured a 2-1 away victory in Djibouti.
Rivers United Also Carry Nigerian Hopes
Rangers are not Nigeria’s only representatives involved in the competition.
Rivers United will host Côte d’Ivoire’s FC San Pedro on Sunday after the sides played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg.
That leaves the tie delicately balanced.
A strong performance at home would move Rivers United into the next preliminary stage, while elimination would bring another continental campaign to an early end.
$6m Prize Awaits Champions
The financial stakes have increased substantially.
CAF says the eventual Champions League winners will receive a record $6 million, making progression increasingly valuable for African clubs.
Even clubs eliminated in the preliminary rounds will receive $100,000 in financial support to help offset travel and logistical expenses.
The second preliminary round will be played in October, after which 16 clubs will qualify for the group stage beginning at the end of November.
For Rangers, however, those later stages can wait.
The immediate assignment is Sobemap — and another opportunity for Nigerian club football to strengthen its presence in Africa’s biggest competition.
