Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from professional tennis after testing positive for cocaine, bringing fresh uncertainty to the former Wimbledon finalist’s career.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on Wednesday that the 31-year-old provided a sample during an ATP 250 tournament in Mallorca, Spain, on June 22. A laboratory accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency later confirmed the presence of benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, in the sample.

Kyrgios has publicly acknowledged the failed test and accepted responsibility for the violation. In a statement shared on social media, the Australian described the incident as a serious mistake and apologised to his fans, family, sponsors and young supporters.

The provisional suspension has been in place since August 4, meaning Kyrgios is currently unable to participate in tennis events while the case progresses.

Kyrgios Accepts Responsibility

Kyrgios did not attempt to deny the positive test.

Instead, he publicly confirmed the result and said he had made a “huge mistake”. He also expressed disappointment over the example his actions could set for young people who follow his career.

The Australian also provided some context about the difficulties he has experienced in recent years.

Kyrgios has struggled with repeated injuries that have significantly limited his time on court. His physical problems have affected his ability to compete consistently, while the uncertainty surrounding his future in tennis has also taken an emotional toll.

He said dealing with the possibility that his playing career could be approaching its final stage has been particularly difficult.

However, Kyrgios made it clear that he did not consider those difficulties an excuse for the failed test.

Instead, he described the incident as a wake-up call and said he intends to use the period away from tennis to focus on himself.

What the Suspension Means

Under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme, cocaine is classified as a stimulant and a substance of abuse. It is prohibited during competition.

The ITIA said that because of the nature of the substance involved, a provisional suspension was mandatory.

While the suspension remains in place, Kyrgios cannot play in, coach at or attend events organised or sanctioned by major tennis bodies, including the ATP, WTA, Grand Slam tournaments and national tennis associations.

Kyrgios has the right to appeal the provisional suspension, but reports indicate that he had not appealed it as of Wednesday.

The provisional suspension does not itself represent the final outcome of the case. A further process will determine what happens next and whether additional sanctions are imposed.

A Difficult Period in Kyrgios’ Career

Kyrgios has been one of the most recognisable and controversial personalities in modern tennis.

He reached a career-high ranking of No. 13 in the world in October 2016 and reached the Wimbledon final in 2022.

His career has also been interrupted by serious injuries.

The Australian has played only a limited number of competitive matches in recent years, making his return to full-time professional tennis increasingly uncertain. His latest disciplinary issue now adds another major obstacle to his comeback.

Kyrgios has nevertheless remained a popular figure among tennis fans because of his entertaining style, powerful serve and outspoken personality.

His Wimbledon run in 2022, when he reached his first Grand Slam singles final, remains one of the defining moments of his career.

He lost that final to Novak Djokovic but established himself as a player capable of competing at the highest level when fit and focused.

Kyrgios Plans Time Away

Following the announcement, Kyrgios said he plans to step away from social media and public life for 28 days.

He said the break would allow him to focus on his personal wellbeing and deal with the challenges he has faced away from the tennis court.

The Australian also asked the public to respect his privacy and that of his family during the period.

His decision comes at a difficult moment in his career, as he attempts to determine what the future holds after years of injuries and limited competition.

The failed drug test could have significant consequences for those plans.

What Happens Next?

The immediate focus will be on the anti-doping process and any further decision regarding Kyrgios’ case.

The player can challenge the provisional suspension, while the relevant authorities will assess the circumstances surrounding the positive test.

For now, however, Kyrgios remains barred from participating in professional tennis events.

The development represents another difficult chapter for a player whose career has been marked by extraordinary talent, major achievements and significant setbacks.

At 31, Kyrgios still has time to return to competitive tennis, but the latest suspension creates another challenge as he attempts to rebuild his career.

His public acceptance of responsibility suggests that the Australian understands the seriousness of the situation.

Whether he can overcome this setback and return to the court will depend on the outcome of the anti-doping proceedings, his physical condition and his ability to regain consistency.

For a player who once reached the Wimbledon final and climbed as high as world No. 13, the coming months could prove crucial in determining whether his tennis career has another chapter left to write.
