Microsoft has announced an $18 billion investment in Australia over the next three years, in what it describes as its largest-ever commitment to the country.

The investment will focus on upgrading government cybersecurity systems and enhancing high-performance supercomputers used in artificial intelligence development.

Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella said the funding marks a major step in expanding AI capabilities and digital infrastructure in the region.

“Australia has an enormous opportunity to translate AI into real economic growth and societal benefit,” Nadella said during a visit to the country as part of a global tour promoting Microsoft’s AI technologies.

The company previously announced a $3 billion investment in 2023 aimed at building multiple data centres across Australia, and the latest commitment significantly expands that footprint.

According to Microsoft, the new funding will be used to upgrade supercomputing infrastructure that processes large-scale datasets required for artificial intelligence systems, while also strengthening cybersecurity cooperation with the Australian government.

Anthony Albanese welcomed the investment, saying it would support both national security and economic growth.

“We want to make sure all Australians benefit from AI,” Albanese said. “Microsoft’s long-term investment in our national capability will help deliver on that plan—strengthening our cyber defences and creating opportunity for Australian workers and businesses.”

Australia has increasingly positioned itself as a strategic hub for AI infrastructure, citing its abundant renewable energy resources and vast land availability as key advantages for hosting energy-intensive data centres.

The announcement comes amid growing global competition for artificial intelligence infrastructure, with major technology companies accelerating investments in cloud computing and data processing capacity.

Other AI-focused firms, including Anthropic, have also indicated interest in expanding data centre operations in Australia, further underscoring the country’s emerging role in the global AI ecosystem.
