The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has reiterated that the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane in Lagos is strictly reserved for designated buses and authorised vehicles, warning that its use by unauthorised persons, including military personnel and local government buses, remains illegal.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the agency’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, following growing concerns over the increasing abuse of the BRT corridor across the state.

According to LAMATA, only BRT buses and vehicles operating under franchises duly regulated by the authority are allowed to use the dedicated lane.

The agency explained that the only exceptions to the rule are emergency response vehicles such as fire trucks and ambulances, and only when they are responding to emergencies.

LAMATA, however, raised alarm over what it described as a growing and flagrant violation of the regulation by unauthorised users.

The authority said some military personnel, para-military agencies, local government and Local Council Development Area buses, as well as private vehicles, have been repeatedly using the lane in violation of the rules.

LAMATA noted that the development is deeply concerning because it undermines the efficiency, safety and purpose of the BRT system.

The agency explained that the BRT corridor was introduced to provide fast, reliable and safe mass transit for commuters in Lagos. It warned that illegal usage disrupts operations and puts passengers and other road users at risk.

According to the authority, unauthorised access to the lane contributes to traffic congestion and weakens the gains already made in improving urban mobility across Lagos State.

LAMATA further stressed that enforcement of the regulation would be intensified across the state, adding that offenders would face sanctions regardless of their status or affiliation.

The authority said anyone caught violating the rule would be apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the relevant traffic laws of Lagos State.

It added that penalties for offenders may include fines, impoundment of vehicles and other legal sanctions.

LAMATA also urged all road users, including security agencies and government bodies, to comply with the established regulations guiding the use of the BRT corridor.

The authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining order, safety and efficiency across the transport system in Lagos.
