The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has visited victims of the recent improvised explosive device (IED) attacks receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and carried out an on-the-spot assessment of the bombing site at Maiduguri Monday Market.
The visit forms part of ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to evaluate the situation and strengthen coordinated security responses in Maiduguri following the deadly attacks.
During his visit, the IGP also met with officials at the Borno State Government House and the State Police Command Headquarters to review existing security strategies and enhance collaboration among security agencies.
Disu expressed deep sympathy to victims and their families, assuring residents that the police are committed to dismantling networks responsible for the attacks and preventing any recurrence.
He noted that security across Maiduguri has been significantly reinforced, with increased police deployments, enhanced surveillance, and stronger joint operations involving the military and other security agencies.
Authorities confirmed that at least 23 people were killed in the explosions that rocked parts of the state on Monday. According to the spokesman of the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Kenneth-Daso, preliminary investigations indicate that the attacks were carried out by suspected suicide bombers.
He added that 108 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment, while emergency responders have evacuated victims from the affected locations.
A combined team of police tactical units, the military, and other joint security operatives has since been deployed to maintain order and prevent further incidents.
In response to the attacks, the Federal Government directed top security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri to oversee operations and stabilise the situation.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned the attacks, describing them as desperate attempts by terrorist elements to instil fear among citizens amid increasing pressure from security forces.
The President assured Nigerians that the government is intensifying efforts to combat insecurity nationwide and has directed emergency agencies to provide adequate care for the injured.
He reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to eliminate terrorism, stating that no part of the country would serve as a safe haven for criminal elements.
Tinubu also commended the efforts of security forces for repelling coordinated attacks on military formations in the state, noting that additional equipment and operational support have been approved to strengthen their capabilities.
The situation in Maiduguri remains under close monitoring as security agencies continue operations to restore calm and ensure the safety of residents.
