Eddie Howe has urged Anthony Gordon to retain his “selfish” streak after the forward’s stunning four-goal performance in Newcastle’s Champions League rout of Qarabag.

The 24-year-old England international netted four times in Wednesday’s 6-1 play-off, first-leg win in Baku, taking his tally in this season’s competition to 10 goals.

Gordon’s final strike came from the penalty spot at the Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium, where he stepped up for a second spot-kick despite Newcastle captain Kieran Trippier appearing to suggest that Nick Woltemade should take it.

Howe, however, saw no problem with the incident.

“There were really big positives to take from that incident. Moments like that get blown out of all proportion — it was a very minor issue,” he said.

“It was great from Anthony that he’s got that strong enough resolve that he wants to score in every moment — and you’d want that from any player.”

The Newcastle manager also praised Trippier’s leadership, saying both players acted with the team’s interests at heart.

“I’ve got no issue with Kieran also, trying to think of the team and trying to lead in his way… I actually thought it was a real positive on all sides.”

Tough test ahead

Mid-table Newcastle United now travel to face second-placed Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The Magpies are seeking their first league victory away at City since September 2000, having lost on their last 16 league visits.

With Gordon in red-hot form, Howe will hope his striker’s confidence — and clinical instinct — continues to fuel Newcastle’s European and domestic ambitions.
