Apple is planning one of its most significant shifts in artificial intelligence strategy yet, with plans to transform Siri into a full-fledged AI chatbot embedded across its devices, according to a Bloomberg report.
The redesigned digital assistant, internally codenamed “Campos,” is expected to replace the current Siri experience entirely and debut later this year as a flagship feature of iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27.
Unlike the existing Siri, which functions largely as a voice-controlled assistant, the new version will support both voice and text-based conversations. It is designed to operate more like modern conversational AI tools, capable of answering complex questions, performing tasks, generating content and interacting more naturally with users.
The move is seen as Apple’s strongest push yet to compete directly with established AI players such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, as the company seeks to close a widening gap in consumer-facing artificial intelligence.
According to the report, Apple is powering the new Siri with a customised version of Google’s Gemini AI under a long-term partnership. The arrangement marks an unusual departure for Apple, which has traditionally avoided deep reliance on rival technologies.
Sources familiar with the project said the revamped Siri will leverage its deep integration with Apple’s operating systems to go beyond the capabilities of standalone chatbot apps. The assistant is expected to pull context from emails, photos and other apps, summarise documents, generate responses and suggest actions based on what users are viewing on their screens.
Despite the expanded capabilities, Apple is expected to maintain its strong emphasis on privacy, with much of the processing reportedly designed to align with the company’s long-standing data protection principles.
Industry analysts say the overhaul represents a fundamental shift in Apple’s approach to AI, repositioning Siri from a basic voice helper to a central, intelligent interface across its ecosystem.
If successful, the new Siri could significantly change how users interact with Apple devices, making it a direct competitor to ChatGPT, Google’s Bard and other conversational AI platforms already reshaping the tech landscape.
