The Lagos State Government has expressed regret over the collapse of a bungalow classroom block at Odokekere High School, Ikorodu, clarifying that the building had earlier been marked for demolition to make way for a new classroom facility.
The statement was issued on Friday by the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS), following the incident, which occurred late Thursday. Authorities confirmed that no casualties were recorded.
“SCRPS received with shock the sad news of the bungalow classroom block which collapsed late Thursday at Odokekere High School in Ikorodu, Lagos. The state government regrets the unfortunate incident,” the statement said.
The committee noted that classified information from its office indicated that the classroom block had already been scheduled for demolition to allow for the construction of a befitting classroom structure to accommodate the school’s large student population.
“All of our students are in perfect condition,” the SCRPS added.
In response to the collapse, Lagos State Governor Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered the immediate relocation of the affected pupils to nearby schools to ensure their academic activities continue uninterrupted.
Additionally, a team from SCRPS will visit the school for an on-the-spot assessment of the incident to facilitate plans for the immediate construction of an ultra-modern classroom block capable of accommodating the school’s growing student population.
