A newly recruited soldier, Dauda Dedan, has allegedly stabbed a police constable, Aaron John, to death during a confrontation in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.
The tragic incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. on Monday in Mayo-Goyi, a suburb of Jalingo, according to the Police Public Relations Officer of the Taraba State Command, James Lashen.
Lashen explained that the late Constable John responded to a distress call from residents concerning a dispute involving the soldier. Unfortunately, the situation escalated and led to the fatal stabbing.
“The late John, who was alerted by some residents of the area over a misunderstanding between them and the soldier, was caught in the middle of the chaos, which led to the soldier stabbing him,” Lashen told reporters on Wednesday.
The suspect, Dauda Dedan, is reportedly on the run, but the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade headquarters in Jalingo has launched an investigation and assured the police of full cooperation in apprehending the fugitive.
“We have been given full assurances of tracking down the fugitive soldier to face the full wrath of the law,” Lashen said.
“Both the Army and the Police are working hand in hand. We have already visited the soldier’s residence and will ensure he is brought to book.”
The police spokesperson also emphasized that relations between the Army and Police in Taraba remain cordial, despite the unfortunate incident.
The tragic event has sparked public concern over security personnel misconduct and inter-agency coordination, with many calling for transparency and justice as investigations continue.
