Ogun State’s scrabble team received a timely morale boost ahead of the 22nd National Sports Festival as the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, made a surprise visit to their training camp on the outskirts of Abeokuta on Saturday.
The 16-player squad, which includes reigning African champion Oluwatimilehin Doko, was deeply engaged in their strategic preparations when the commissioner appeared unannounced, much to the delight of the players and coaches.
Led by team captain Cyril Umebiye, the team welcomed Hon. Isiaka, expressing gratitude for his gesture which they described as motivating. The players pledged to give their best and bring pride to the state at the national event scheduled for May 16–30.
In a brief interview with the media team led by Tayo Ogunseye, Hon. Isiaka expressed satisfaction with the team’s discipline and determination.
“I’m excited to be here! What I have seen so far is a strong and determined team and we are very ready to support you and ensure that you get the best result,” he said.
He added that his expectations were high due to the team’s national rankings and praised the tranquil training environment which he believes suits the mental nature of the game.
“Your game needs a calm and cool atmosphere… with your determination, you will make us proud.”
Speaking about broader festival preparations, the commissioner noted that Ogun State is committed to wearing “three caps” — providing top-notch facilities, ensuring comfort for visitors, and fully preparing its athletes.
“We are situating teams where they can train best, rather than crowding everyone into one location. So far, we are on track.”
Scrabble will be one of the 37 events at the festival, with medals contested across 12 categories including men’s and women’s singles, doubles, and team events at different levels — Masters, Intermediate, and Open. The scrabble events will take place at the Ikenne centre.
