The Nigeria Police Force has officially resumed the issuance of tinted glass permits across the country, following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
This move comes amid widespread complaints from the public about harassment by officers over factory-fitted tinted windows. The announcement was made on Wednesday in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
“The Nigeria Police Force, under the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has reactivated the issuance of Tinted Glass Permits (TGP) nationwide through a secure and user-friendly digital platform available at https://possap.gov.ng,” the statement read.
Adejobi said the updated system is designed to promote transparency and regulate legitimate use of tinted windows. He noted that many newer vehicle models are manufactured with built-in tinted windows, making a regulated system necessary.
“This initiative reflects the need for a clear, transparent, and accountable process for regularising factory-fitted tinted glass on vehicles,” he said.
However, the Force emphasized that tinted windows have also been misused for criminal activities including kidnapping, armed robbery, and ‘one-chance’ scams. To combat this, the new system incorporates biometric verification, background checks, and QR-coded permits, all tied to the applicant’s NIN and TIN.
Applicants can now apply online, and the system guarantees a streamlined processing time of 72 hours.
To allow motorists to comply, the Police announced a 30-day grace period beginning May 1, 2025. After this period, enforcement will commence.
“Any officer found engaging in extortion or harassment during enforcement will face strict disciplinary action,” the statement warned.
IGP Egbetokun reaffirmed the Police Force’s commitment to technology-driven policing. He called on Nigerians to support the initiative for safer roads and improved public trust.
