In an effort to tackle the growing environmental concerns caused by single-use plastics, the Lagos State Government has launched a comprehensive campaign aimed at educating the public and promoting sustainable alternatives.
The campaign, which is part of the governor’s six-point agenda focusing on health and the environment, was officially flagged off at the State Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja, on Tuesday with conversations focused on the initiative aimed at environmental protection and sustainability.
Led by the Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, the initiative is a joint effort between the Hephzibarian Women Initiatives and the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources. The campaign seeks to address the devastating impact of plastic waste on the environment and public health, especially in the bustling metropolis of Lagos, where plastic pollution has become a growing concern.
Representing the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, special Adviser to the Governor on the Environment, Mr. Olakune Rotimi – Akodu highlighted the removal of Styrofoam from canals by the government as a significant achievement, noting the challenge of plastic waste still persists.
“The ministry is working to ensure waste is collected and disposed of properly to prevent environmental contamination and flash flooding. ”
He emphasized the need for collective effort beyond legislation to transform policy into practice, stressing the importance of stakeholder engagement and industry cooperation to handle waste responsibly.
Convener of the Hephzibarian women Initiatives, Barrister Omowunmi Ogungbaibi explained that it is essential to shift the mindset of the public and encourage the use of alternatives to single-use plastics, which will ultimately contribute to a cleaner, healthier Lagos.
“By fostering a collaborative environment where stakeholders from diverse sectors work together, we can drive sustainable practices and innovations that benefit both our communities and the environment. This collective effort is crucial for promoting eco-friendly products, supporting local enterprises, and encouraging a broader shift towards environmental stewardship.”
The campaign targets a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including manufacturers, urban planners, and local communities. Its primary focus is to raise awareness about the environmental issues related to single-use plastics, while also promoting the adoption of more sustainable practices. Local innovators and startups that produce eco-friendly products will also receive support, as the initiative aims to foster local solutions to global problems.
It will be recalled that the Government had provided clarity on the ban emphasizing that PET bottles and sachet water are not included in the restrictions.
The objective of the ban according to the state government is to mitigate the effects of plastic waste in the environment, particularly in waterways and other sensitive ecological areas of Lagos, a state with a significant aquatic ecosystem.
Lagos is one of Africa’s most vibrant cities, and has long been grappling with plastic pollution. The statistics are staggering: Styrofoam alone contributes over 870,000 metric tons of waste each year. This environmental menace clogs drains, causes flash floods, and threatens the health of both the city’s residents and marine life.
The campaign is also expected to provide networking opportunities, media exposure, and incentive programs designed to reward individuals and organizations that embrace sustainable behaviors. By recognizing and supporting those who lead by example, the initiative hopes to foster a culture of environmental stewardship that will be felt across the city.
