A non-denominational Christian organisation, Christian Transformation Network (CTN), declared its support for the presidential candidacy of Peter Obi of the Labour Party ahead of Nigeria’s 2023 general election.
The group made its position known during an event tagged “Good Governance, Strategy, and Synergy,” held in the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos.
The meeting brought together members of the organisation from different parts of Lagos and neighbouring Ogun State.
Speaking at the event, the Convener of CTN, Dr. David Aboderin, said the organisation was established out of concern over the challenges facing Nigeria and the need for citizens to participate actively in efforts to improve the country.
Aboderin said the network was created to bring together members of the Christian community and provide a platform through which they could contribute to national development.
He called on Nigerians to become more involved in choosing leaders and supporting people they believe can contribute to good governance.
According to him, the country needed citizens who would take responsibility for its future rather than remain passive about developments in the nation.
He said CTN was committed to promoting what it described as the ideals of a “New Nigeria” and “New Nigerians.”
Aboderin also called for the emergence of leaders at different levels of government who would work towards creating a more equitable society.
The organisation’s declaration of support for Peter Obi, according to the convener, followed what he described as a critical assessment of the presidential candidates participating in the 2023 election.
He urged members of the network across the country to participate actively in the electoral process and support candidates based on their assessment of their capacity, competence and vision.
The CTN convener said the organisation had structures across states, local government areas and constituencies, which it believed could help mobilise citizens around issues of leadership and governance.
He stressed the importance of using available resources to promote what the group considered positive changes in society.
The meeting also featured Christian leaders, political figures and other participants who discussed governance and the 2023 elections.
Among those present was Hon. Mutiu Kunle Okunola, a Labour Party candidate for the Ikeja Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Okunola encouraged voters to participate actively in the election and elect leaders they considered credible and capable of addressing the country’s challenges.
Other participants included the Deputy Convener of CTN, Dr. Godwin Solomon Nwachukwu; Primate Henry Amike; Hon. King Okuneye; Lagos State Coordinator of Big Tent, Chief Victor Adeniyi; and National Secretary of CTN, Pastor Rehoboth Agbede.
Rev. Femi Paul, Mrs. Adedoyin Sonuga, Dr. David Odi and Apostle Segun Adio were also listed among participants at the event.
The declaration came at a period when political groups and civil society organisations were actively mobilising support for candidates ahead of the February 2023 presidential election.
CTN’s position reflected the group’s stated preference following its assessment of the candidates and its broader campaign for what it described as responsible and effective leadership.
