The image of Donald Trump will soon appear in a limited-edition United States passport, marking a significant departure from longstanding conventions in government-issued documents.

The US State Department confirmed that the special passports are being prepared to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence.

According to officials, the design will include Trump’s official portrait superimposed over the Declaration, accompanied by his signature in gold. Another image featured in the passport will depict a historic painting of the country’s Founding Fathers.

A State Department spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, said the commemorative passports would be released in limited quantities as part of the anniversary celebrations in July. A senior official added that the passports would be available in Washington for a limited time and at no additional cost, though it remains unclear whether applicants can opt out of receiving the special edition.

The move marks a rare instance in modern democracies where a sitting leader’s image appears in a passport. Traditionally, US passports feature historical scenes such as the Apollo 11 Moon Landing and landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, rather than contemporary political figures.

Since returning to office, Trump has increasingly placed his personal imprint on government institutions. His name and image have appeared on federal buildings, and recent decisions have included adding his signature to US currency.

The development has sparked debate among observers about the evolving role of presidential symbolism in public institutions, particularly in a democratic system where such displays have historically been limited.

In contrast, countries like the United Kingdom feature the likeness of King Charles III on currency, reflecting his role as a ceremonial head of state rather than an active political leader.

The announcement comes amid broader diplomatic engagements, including a recent meeting between Trump and King Charles III during a state visit to Washington.
