A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Kenneth Okonkwo, has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the worsening security situation in Nigeria, describing the President as incapable of addressing the challenge.

Okonkwo made the remarks on Wednesday while speaking on Sunrise Daily, a programme on Channels Television, where he highlighted recent violence in Plateau State and other parts of the country as evidence of what he termed a leadership failure.

“I don’t need to tell any Nigerian now that Nigeria is not working. You can imagine a President who went to Plateau and said I’m going to condole with the victims.

“He stayed at the airport and told the victims to come and condole with him,” Okonkwo said during the interview.

He also criticised the administration over the persistent electricity crisis in the country, recalling previous assurances made by the President regarding power supply.

“This same president was the one who told Nigerians that if he did not provide electricity, let him be voted out. And right there he told them, of course incompetently, that it will never happen again. I told Nigerians that Tinubu is incapable of giving security,” he said.

The ADC chieftain maintained that insecurity remains Nigeria’s most pressing challenge, warning that other aspects of governance would continue to struggle without safety across the country.

Okonkwo further alleged that incidents of violence, including attacks on military personnel in Borno State, demonstrate the seriousness of the crisis, adding that insecurity has become a daily occurrence nationwide.

“It is not just that there is no security; he is incapable of doing it. Before he left Plateau, a series of deaths immediately followed his empty declaration and empty boast, which Rauf Aregbesola has rightly described in our convention as saying that Renewed Hope is a scam. I told Nigeria from day one that this is renewed hopelessness,” Okonkwo said.

He stressed that security must remain a top priority for the country, noting that meaningful development cannot occur without stability.

“So that Nigeria may work for security, one major important point in our theme of this convention. Because without security, there is nothing you can do.

“We are having security challenges all over Nigeria. In Borno State, our armed forces are being killed and massacred. As I talk to you, insecurity is a daily occurrence.

“So you don’t need last week to refer to the data of failure of this government. Without security, any other thing cannot come into shape,” he added.
