The federal government is set to undertake a comprehensive review of the National Land Transport Policy, identified as a weak link in Nigeria’s transportation value chain. In a bid to address this, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, and the Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, convened in Abuja over the weekend to explore strategies for integrating Public Private Partnership (PPP) into the system.
During the interactive session, Bagudu emphasized the importance of incorporating PPP arrangements into the transportation policy to garner support from stakeholders and enhance its effectiveness. He highlighted the recent approval of the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Initiative at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting as a step towards addressing funding challenges that have hindered policy implementation, development plans, and the agenda for 2050.
Bagudu commended his counterpart in the Transportation Ministry for implementing commendable policies and projects crucial for the country’s development. The collaboration between the two ministries reflects the government’s commitment to revitalizing the transportation sector and improving infrastructure across the nation.
The review of the National Land Transport Policy underscores the government’s recognition of the need for strategic reforms to address existing gaps and enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the transportation system. By incorporating PPP arrangements, the government aims to leverage private sector resources and expertise to drive sustainable development and ensure the seamless movement of goods and people across the country.
As plans for the policy review progress, stakeholders and industry experts anticipate positive outcomes that will contribute to the overall growth and development of Nigeria’s transportation sector. With a focus on partnership, innovation, and inclusive planning, the government seeks to build a robust and resilient transportation infrastructure that meets the needs of the nation now and in the future.
