Twitter’s second head of trust and safety under owner Elon Musk has resigned. According to reports, Twitter and Ms. Irwin have not yet provided official comments on the matter.
Ella Irwin took over the role after the departure of the previous head, Yoel Roth, in November 2022, shortly after Mr. Musk’s takeover of the company.
The head of trust and safety is responsible for content moderation, which has been a significant topic of discussion since Mr. Musk assumed control. However, her resignation comes shortly after Mr. Musk publicly criticized a content moderation decision made by Twitter.
He expressed disagreement with the decision to limit the visibility of a video based on allegations of misgendering. It should be noted that the reason for Ms. Irwin’s resignation remains unclear.
This development follows Twitter’s recent withdrawal from the European Union’s voluntary code to combat disinformation.
Linda Yaccarino, the former head of advertising at NBCUniversal, is set to become Twitter’s new chief executive, as announced by Mr. Musk.
Notably, studies have suggested an increase in hate speech during Mr. Musk’s tenure, while Twitter disbanded a volunteer group that advised on self-harm, child abuse, and hate speech.
Despite these concerns, efforts have been made to moderate content accuracy, such as expanding the Community Notes feature to include images and considering its expansion to video in the future.
