The Republic of Ireland were held to a 2-2 draw by Austria in their UEFA Nations League Group B3 match at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
Ireland appeared on course for an important victory after striker Troy Parrott scored twice in the first half, giving the hosts a 2-0 advantage. However, Austria produced a strong second-half comeback to secure a share of the points.
Parrott opened the scoring in the 12th minute with an impressive individual effort. The striker controlled a long ball before working his way through the Austrian defence and sending a low finish into the far corner.
Ireland doubled their advantage just before half-time when Parrott converted a penalty. The spot-kick was awarded after Ryan Manning was brought down inside the Austrian penalty area, with the decision confirmed following a VAR review.
Austria, however, returned from the break with renewed attacking pressure.
Alexander Prass reduced the deficit in the 71st minute before Michael Gregoritsch equalised only six minutes later. The quick turnaround changed the momentum of the match and left Ireland unable to restore their two-goal advantage.
Both teams had opportunities to score a late winner, but neither could find the decisive goal.
The match was also briefly interrupted twice during the first half. Tennis balls carrying Palestinian flag stickers were thrown onto the pitch, leading the referee to pause play. Later, a spectator carrying a Palestinian flag entered the field and was removed by security.
Despite dropping two points after leading 2-0, Ireland remain in contention in Group B3. The result also continued an eventful Nations League campaign for the Irish side, which includes a forthcoming fixture against Israel in Serbia that will be played behind closed doors.
For Austria, the comeback earned a valuable point after they had fallen two goals behind. Their second-half response demonstrated their ability to recover from a difficult position and keep the match competitive until the final whistle.
The result leaves both teams with work to do as the Nations League group stage continues, with every point important in the race for promotion from League B.
