Liberia and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic relations, expanding bilateral trade and attracting new investments as policymakers, business leaders and investors explored opportunities for deeper cooperation between the two West African nations.

The commitment was renewed at the Liberia–Nigeria Trade and Investment Forum held in Lagos.

The forum was organised by the Government of the Republic of Liberia through the Embassy of Liberia in Nigeria and the Office of the Honorary Consul General of Liberia in Lagos.

It brought together stakeholders from government, business and the investment community to examine ways of strengthening commercial ties between both countries.

The forum was held under the theme, “Building Bridges for Shared Prosperity: Strengthening Liberia–Nigeria Trade and Investment Partnership.”

Discussions focused on the need to move beyond traditional diplomatic relations and establish stronger commercial partnerships capable of supporting industrial development, job creation and sustainable economic growth.

Participants also considered the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to increase intra-African trade and create a more integrated continental market.

Against this background, stakeholders emphasised the importance of strengthening economic cooperation between African countries.

For Liberia and Nigeria, closer commercial engagement could provide opportunities for businesses to access new markets, establish partnerships and explore investment opportunities in areas of mutual interest.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, the Managing Director of the Tafawa Balewa Square Management Board, Mr Joseph Umar, described regional collaboration as essential to unlocking Africa’s economic potential.

The message reinforced the need for African countries to work together to build stronger economic systems and create an environment where businesses can thrive.

The forum also highlighted the importance of private-sector participation in driving economic cooperation.

While government policies can establish the framework for trade and investment, business leaders and investors remain critical to turning economic agreements into practical commercial opportunities.

Stronger collaboration between Liberia and Nigeria could therefore create room for increased investment flows, technology exchange, entrepreneurship and employment generation.

The engagement also comes at a time when African countries are increasingly looking inward to strengthen regional value chains and reduce dependence on markets outside the continent.

Through stronger bilateral partnerships, countries can leverage their respective resources, expertise and market opportunities to support shared prosperity.

The Liberia–Nigeria Trade and Investment Forum therefore represents an opportunity to build a stronger foundation for sustained commercial relations.

With continued engagement between government and the private sector, both countries can explore new opportunities to increase trade, encourage investment and strengthen their contribution to Africa’s broader economic integration agenda.
