Mexico began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa, delighting a crowd of 80,824 fans and delivering the first win of the tournament.

Playing in the opening match of the competition, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, El Tri combined attacking quality with defensive discipline to claim all three points.

Goals from Julian Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez secured the victory and gave the hosts an ideal start to their quest for World Cup success on home soil.

Mexico wasted little time asserting their dominance after kickoff, controlling possession and forcing South Africa onto the defensive.

The breakthrough arrived in the ninth minute when Julian Quiñones capitalised on a defensive error. The forward reacted quickest to a loose ball near the edge of the penalty area and calmly fired past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to make it 1-0.

The early goal sparked celebrations among the home supporters and increased Mexico’s confidence in attack.

Mexico continued to create opportunities throughout the first half. Raúl Jiménez threatened on several occasions, while Quiñones came close to adding a second goal when his effort struck the outside of the post.

South Africa struggled to contain Mexico’s attacking movement but remained competitive. Their best chance before halftime fell to Mbekezile Mbokazi, whose effort was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Raúl Rangel.

The visitors returned from the break determined to find an equaliser. However, their challenge became more difficult in the 49th minute when Yaya Sithole received a straight red card for a dangerous tackle.

With a numerical advantage, Mexico increased the pressure and eventually doubled their lead in the 67th minute.

Roberto Alvarado delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area, and veteran striker Raúl Jiménez rose above the defence to power a header into the bottom corner.

The goal effectively ended South Africa’s hopes of mounting a comeback and highlighted Mexico’s superiority throughout the contest.

The closing stages produced further drama as disciplinary issues affected both teams.

South Africa were reduced to nine men in the 84th minute after Themba Zwane was sent off following a VAR review.

Mexico also finished the match with 10 players after defender César Montes received a red card deep into stoppage time for a reckless challenge.

Despite the late incidents, Javier Aguirre’s side comfortably controlled the remainder of the match and prevented South Africa from creating any meaningful chances.

The victory gives Mexico an early boost in the group stage and raises expectations for a strong tournament run in front of their home fans.

For South Africa, attention now turns to their next fixture as they seek to recover from a disappointing opening-night defeat.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup officially underway, Mexico have delivered the tournament’s first statement performance, combining efficiency, composure and attacking quality to begin their campaign on a winning note.
