Residents of Dakar have been reacting to the dismissal of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko following his sacking by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

The decision came after months of growing tensions between the two leaders, who had previously come to power under the Pastef Party on a platform promising to tackle government mismanagement and reform state institutions.

However, their relationship reportedly deteriorated over time, culminating in the president dissolving the government and removing Sonko from office.

The move has triggered mixed reactions across Senegal’s capital, with supporters and critics of the former prime minister expressing sharply different views.

Some residents expressed strong support for Sonko, describing his removal as unjustified and politically motivated.

One supporter, Ibrahima Dione, said Sonko had achieved more than any other minister in the country’s history and vowed continued loyalty to him.

Another resident, Modou Diaw, described the dismissal as “unsettling,” adding that the country needed stability and jobs rather than political conflict.

Others, however, welcomed the decision, saying it could help restore stability amid concerns over Senegal’s growing economic and debt challenges.

Thierno Sow said the president had the constitutional authority to appoint and dismiss officials and should be allowed to act in the national interest.

He added that if the decision benefits the country, it should be supported.

The political fallout is expected to continue as Sonko remains a dominant figure in Senegalese politics.

He is widely anticipated to contest future elections and could run for president in 2029 following recent changes that restored his eligibility.

Observers say the development could set the stage for another political rivalry between Sonko and Faye in the coming years.

Analysts also note that the rift between the two leaders marks a significant shift within Senegal’s political landscape, given their earlier alliance that helped bring the current administration to power in 2024.

As tensions continue, attention is now turning to how the government will manage economic pressures and maintain political stability in the wake of the shake-up.
