Aston Villa finally ended their 30-year wait for silverware after cruising to a stunning 3-0 victory against Freiburg in the Europa League final on Wednesday night in Istanbul.
Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers sealed Villa’s first trophy since the 1996 League Cup and their first major European title since winning the European Cup in 1982.
Unai Emery’s men produced a fearless display at the Besiktas Stadium, overwhelming Freiburg from the opening whistle in front of thousands of travelling supporters.
Villa nearly took an early lead when Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu denied Rogers in the opening minutes. However, the Premier League side remained in complete control and eventually found the breakthrough late in the first half.
Tielemans opened the scoring in the 41st minute with a spectacular volley. The Belgian midfielder connected perfectly with Rogers’ floated cross from a cleverly worked short corner, smashing his effort past Atubolu from just inside the box.
The goal sparked wild celebrations among Villa fans and gave Emery’s side full momentum heading into the break.
Just moments later, Buendia doubled Villa’s advantage with an even more breathtaking strike. The Argentine midfielder was given space outside the penalty area and curled a sublime effort into the far corner, leaving Freiburg stunned.
Villa continued to dominate after halftime and put the result beyond doubt in the 58th minute. Buendia turned provider this time, delivering a dangerous cross that Rogers converted from close range to complete a memorable night for the English club.
The triumph marked another historic achievement for Emery, who extended his remarkable Europa League legacy by winning the competition for a fifth time. The Spanish manager previously lifted the trophy three times with Sevilla and once with Villarreal.
Villa’s victory was made even more special by the presence of club legends Peter Withe and Dennis Mortimer, heroes of the club’s famous 1982 European Cup triumph over Bayern Munich. Fittingly, Villa wore white shirts in Istanbul, mirroring the kit worn during that iconic victory in Rotterdam.
Prince William, a lifelong Aston Villa supporter, joined thousands of ecstatic fans in celebrating the club’s long-awaited return to European glory. Hollywood actor Tom Hanks also showed his support by sending a good luck message before kick-off.
The success completed a remarkable turnaround for Villa under Emery, who took charge in October 2022 when the club was struggling near the relegation zone. After several painful near-misses in recent seasons, Villa finally delivered the silverware their supporters had craved for decades.
Their Europa League triumph also capped an unforgettable week after securing qualification for next season’s Champions League with a crucial win against Liverpool.
On an unforgettable night beside the Bosphorus, Aston Villa’s glorious past and exciting future finally came together once again.
