Trump Warns Iran as Peace Talks Stall Over Nuclear Demands and Gulf Tensions

Diplomatic standoff deepens as US-Iran negotiations falter amid competing conditions and rising global energy concerns.

US President Donald Trump has warned Iran that the “clock is ticking” as negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing conflict appear to have stalled.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Iran must act quickly or face severe consequences.

“They better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!” he wrote.

The statement came as Trump held discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to reports from Israeli media citing Netanyahu’s office.

Iranian media outlets, however, reported that the United States has not made meaningful concessions in response to Tehran’s latest proposals, raising concerns over a possible breakdown in negotiations.

The semi-official Mehr News Agency said the lack of compromise from Washington could result in an “impasse in the negotiations.”

The exchange of statements underscores widening differences between both sides over key issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security arrangements.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei defended Tehran’s proposals, describing them as “responsible” and “generous,” despite US rejection.

According to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency, Tehran’s proposal includes an immediate end to hostilities across all fronts, including attacks involving Iran-backed groups in the region, alongside demands for an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports.

The proposal also calls for guarantees against future attacks on Iran, compensation for war damages, and recognition of Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.

In response, Iranian state-linked Fars News Agency reported that Washington has outlined five counter-conditions, including restricting Iran to operating only one nuclear site and transferring its enriched uranium stockpile to the United States.

The report also suggested that the US has signalled openness to a temporary suspension—up to 20 years—of Iran’s nuclear programme, marking a potential shift in Washington’s negotiating position.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor, remains under Iranian control, with Tehran maintaining restrictions that have contributed to volatility in global oil markets.

Iran has said its actions are in retaliation for US and Israeli military operations, while Washington continues to enforce pressure through maritime restrictions targeting Iranian ports.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has emerged as a mediator between both sides, although significant gaps remain in their positions, making a near-term breakthrough unlikely.

Analysts warn that continued deadlock could further destabilise energy markets and prolong uncertainty across the Middle East.
