The Labour Party Nigeria has congratulated Nigerian workers on International Workers’ Day, calling on authorities to intensify efforts to improve welfare amid rising economic pressures.
In a statement issued in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, the party described Workers’ Day as a significant moment that reflects its long-standing connection with the struggles and aspirations of the Nigerian workforce since its registration in 2003.
While acknowledging recent government actions, including adjustments to the minimum wage, the party stressed that such measures remain insufficient given the prevailing inflationary environment.
“We use this opportunity to call on those in authority to intensify efforts toward improving the welfare of Nigerian workers,” the statement read.
It added, “While we acknowledge the current administration’s steps to ease the harsh realities faced by workers, particularly the recent increase in the minimum wage, we emphasise that much more remains to be done, especially in light of prevailing inflationary pressures.”
The party also commended labour unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, for their continued efforts in defending workers’ rights and advocating for better conditions.
Reaffirming its alignment with workers’ interests, the Labour Party pledged support for policies that guarantee fair wages and comply with international labour standards.
“We assure Nigerian workers that the Labour Party stands firmly with them and will never abandon the collective struggle for good governance—one that guarantees fair wages and aligns with the ideals and standards of the International Labour Organisation,” Asogwa stated.
Looking ahead to future elections, the party urged workers to remain committed to its cause, expressing confidence in what it described as the eventual triumph of the people.
“Aluta continua, victoria ascerta,” the statement concluded.
