The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government, as he extended congratulations to workers across the country.
According to a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, on April 29, 2026, the minister commended Nigerian workers for their dedication and contributions to national development.
He noted that their efforts remain essential to Nigeria’s growth and prosperity, urging continued commitment to patriotism, productivity, and duty.
“The Federal Government has declared Friday, 1st May 2026, a public holiday to celebrate this year’s International Workers Day,” the statement read.
Tunji-Ojo praised workers for their role in strengthening the economy and reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving welfare, enhancing security, and creating a more conducive environment for economic growth.
He also encouraged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on unity, peace, and the importance of nation-building through diligence and cooperation.
Workers’ Day, observed globally, honours the contributions of the labour force and highlights ongoing discussions around fair wages, working conditions, and social protection.
In Nigeria, the annual celebration often serves as a platform for labour unions and government officials to engage on workplace reforms and economic policies affecting workers.
