A tweet by tech billionaire Elon Musk has sparked widespread reactions among Nigerian social media users after many misinterpreted his reference to “APC.”
Musk, the CEO of Tesla, took to X on Sunday to describe his futuristic vehicle, the Tesla Cybertruck, writing: “Cybertruck is an APC from the future.”
The post quickly gained global traction but triggered particularly intense reactions from some Nigerians, who widely recognize “APC” as the acronym for the ruling All Progressives Congress, the party that produced President Bola Tinubu.
Many users flooded the comment section, mistakenly assuming Musk was referring to Nigeria’s political party rather than the military term Armoured Personnel Carrier, which the Cybertruck’s rugged design is often compared to.
Several replies reflected confusion and curiosity. One user who identifies as Daily Pulse asked directly, “Which APC are you referring to, sir?”
Another user, First Principles, warned Musk about the political connotation of the abbreviation in Nigeria, writing, “You might want to skip that abbreviation, Elon. In Nigeria, ‘APC’ represents a political party that has brought years of hardship, insecurity, and hunger to millions. It’s a trigger for a lot of pain here.”
Others pleaded with Musk to clarify his wording. A user identified as Dhamilarey wrote, “Please find a synonym for the word APC because APC is the greatest nightmare in Nigeria. Don’t let Nigerians start boycotting Tesla.”
Some reactions were humorous. A commenter named Prom Prom joked, “My heart first dropped for my belle. Elon, please don’t give me a jump scare like this again.”
Another user, Aanuoluwapo Sukoto, offered a more optimistic take. “As a Nigerian, seeing ‘APC from the future’ hit different. But this Cybertruck sounds like the real armored beast we need—indestructible, all-terrain luxury that vibes through rainbows and tough roads,” he wrote.
Other netizens urged Musk to spell out the abbreviation to avoid confusion. One user, Parable, said, “Please write that APC in full abeg, before these guys will use it and run the agenda.”
A commenter named Tamunotonye added that the acronym had become emotionally charged in Nigeria. “Anything APC gives us PTSD in Nigeria. We have been traumatized by that acronym,” the tweet read.
While some leaned into satire about Nigeria’s political climate, others attempted to clarify the situation. Dr. Ose Etoobhio explained that APC in Musk’s tweet referred to Armoured Personnel Carrier, a type of military vehicle often compared to the Cybertruck’s design.
Internet commentator Daniel Regha also weighed in, stating that the term likely refers to the vehicle’s armored-style design and partial functionality resembling a military vehicle.
Despite the misunderstanding, the exchange highlighted how global tech conversations can quickly intersect with local political sensitivities, particularly in countries where certain acronyms carry powerful political meaning.
