President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of the mandate of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG), which will now be known as the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV). The move is part of a renewed effort to reposition Nigeria’s clean mobility strategy.
Under the expanded mandate, PiCNG & EV will coordinate nationwide strategies for both gas-driven and electric vehicles, driving the deployment of CNG infrastructure including Mother and Daughter Stations, Integrated Refuelling Units, CNG vehicles, equipment, and conversion programmes. The initiative will also anchor the rollout of electric vehicles, EV charging infrastructure, and associated investments.
“Gas remains a competitive and strategic fuel for transportation, leveraging Nigeria’s abundant resources to lower costs, strengthen energy security, and conserve foreign exchange,” a statement from the Presidency noted. The inclusion of electric vehicles further reinforces the government’s agenda for efficient, affordable, and environmentally responsible mobility.
President Tinubu directed the Executive Chairman of PiCNG & EV to establish a coordinated process for the rapid deployment of vehicle conversion kits nationwide, ensuring that these kits remain accessible to Nigerians at reasonable costs. To achieve this, the Initiative will collaborate with CreditCorp Nigeria, financial institutions, and other partners to design cost-effective financing structures for vehicle conversions.
Additionally, the President called for the accelerated deployment of Mobile Refuelling Units (MRUs) to expand access to CNG while permanent infrastructure continues to scale.
The expanded PiCNG & EV initiative represents a strategic push towards cleaner, more sustainable transportation in Nigeria, combining gas-based and electric mobility to meet economic, environmental, and energy security objectives.
