Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed the importance of Nigeria’s partnership with the United Kingdom in tackling insecurity, stating that collaboration remains vital in addressing terrorism and regional instability.

The President made the remarks on Wednesday night during a state banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle. The event marked the first time a Nigerian leader has addressed a gathering at the historic venue.

Tinubu said he would further discuss Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and challenges affecting regional stability during his meeting with Keir Starmer.

“Our West African region faces complex terrorism challenges with roots in the Sahel. Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability,” the President stated, stressing the need for sustained cooperation.

Reflecting on his past, Tinubu expressed gratitude to the UK for offering him refuge during the military regime of Sani Abacha in the 1990s. He recalled how the Metropolitan Police provided protection following threats from agents of the military government.

He described the support received during what he called “the dark years of military dictatorship” as deeply significant, noting that it remains a lasting part of Nigeria’s democratic history.

The President also referenced the pro-democracy struggle of that era, which included activists such as Ken Saro-Wiwa, whose execution alongside other Ogoni leaders drew global condemnation.

During his speech, Tinubu emphasised the enduring relationship between Nigeria and the UK, highlighting shared institutional frameworks. He noted that Nigeria’s legal system draws from English common law, while its parliamentary structure reflects British constitutional traditions.

He further acknowledged the contributions of Nigerians in the UK, particularly in the healthcare sector, where many serve in the National Health Service.

The President also pointed to prominent sports figures of Nigerian heritage, including Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Maro Itoje, and Anthony Joshua, as symbols of the strong human connection between both nations.

Highlighting Nigeria’s position within the Commonwealth of Nations, Tinubu said the country remains committed to contributing to the growth of the 56-member body.

Despite ongoing security challenges, he expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, describing it as a nation of vibrant, ambitious people determined to achieve their full potential.

The state visit, which runs from March 18 to 19, is the first by a Nigerian President to the UK in 37 years, the last being under Ibrahim Babangida in 1989.

Officials say the visit is expected to yield several agreements covering trade, investment, defence, and cultural cooperation, including a £746 million financing deal for the refurbishment of Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port.
