The Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, Niger State, will on Sunday, February 1, graduate a total of 5,297 students, out of whom 111 earned First-Class honours.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Faruk Kuta, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing in Minna ahead of the university’s 43rd Founders’ Day and 34th convocation ceremony.

Addressing concerns over the convocation being scheduled for a Sunday, Prof. Kuta clarified that the date was coincidental with the Founders’ Day celebration and was not intended to undermine religious observances.

“The Convocation Ceremony on Sunday, 1st February, coincides with our 43rd Founders’ Day, a moment to honour the visionaries who laid the foundation of this institution and to celebrate excellence through prize awards and degree conferment,” he explained.

According to him, the dual event was deliberately designed to honour the institution’s founders while celebrating academic excellence.

Giving a breakdown of the graduating students for the 2024/2025 academic session, the Vice-Chancellor said out of 4,438 first-degree recipients, 111 earned First-Class honours, 1,525 secured Second Class Upper Division, 2,134 obtained Second Class Lower Division, 631 achieved Third Class, while 37 received Pass Degrees.

He added that the university would also award 73 Postgraduate Diplomas, 633 Master’s Degrees, and 153 Doctorate Degrees.

“These achievements highlight our unwavering commitment to academic excellence despite prevailing challenges,” Prof. Kuta stated.

The Vice-Chancellor further announced key institutional milestones recorded by the university, including the recent award of a ₦1 billion Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Agricultural Commercial Farm Grant to FUT Minna.

He also revealed that the institution attracted two major international research grants in 2025 — a $3 million ICT Development grant from the Agence Française de Développement and a £15,000 Open Access Books grant from the United Kingdom.

In addition, Prof. Kuta disclosed the establishment of the College of Medical Sciences and Health Technology, which has received full approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC). He noted that pioneer students of the college have already commenced academic activities in the 2025/2026 academic session.

On student welfare, the Vice-Chancellor said the university is making concerted efforts to improve on-campus accommodation, while appreciating philanthropists who have supported initiatives aimed at providing housing for students.
