The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Lagos State chapter, has dismissed claims of egg scarcity in the state, insisting that eggs are readily available and in surplus.
The Chairman of the association in Lagos State, Mr Mojeed Iyiola, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.
Iyiola reiterated that there is no shortage of eggs in the state, describing reports of scarcity in some areas as misleading.
“I want to say there are eggs available in Lagos presently. There is no scarcity of eggs in Lagos,” he said.
According to him, situations where eggs appear unavailable in some locations may not be due to actual scarcity.
“So in places where they are witnessing scarcity of eggs, I don’t think it’s a natural scarcity. Probably they have paucity of funds and could not buy the products, but there are eggs available,” he explained.
The PAN chairman disclosed that the association recently took steps to prevent an egg glut by selling eggs at reduced prices across the state.
“We recently displayed crates of eggs virtually across the eight zones we have in Lagos from December 31, 2025, till the new year at ridiculously low prices,” he said.
He added that crates were sold for between N4,800 and N5,000, compared to the usual farm gate price of N4,900 to N5,200 per crate.
Iyiola also noted that egg and chicken prices could further drop during the Easter period if the Lagos State Government extends its intervention in the poultry sector.
He explained that some traders who claim scarcity may be facing supply challenges due to outstanding debts to their suppliers.
“The probable reason why some egg traders may not have the produce available for sale is that they may be owing their suppliers who probably refused to give them new stock,” he said.
Iyiola said that government intervention had earlier helped stabilise prices in the state.
“For now, there is no scarcity of eggs, and we have been selling at a reasonable price for a while now because we had an intervention from the Lagos State Government, and our agreement was to force the price down,” he stated.
Although the intervention has been paused, he revealed that discussions are ongoing for further government support.
“The government is contemplating giving us more intervention so as to drop the price of poultry products during the Easter period. If that is done, then we are going to have a subsidised rate for chicken and eggs during the Easter celebration,” Iyiola added.
