Akor Adams heartbroken as Nigeria miss 2026 World Cup after DR Congo shoot-out defeat

Sevilla striker expresses deep disappointment as Super Eagles fall short in Rabat play-off thriller.

Nigeria striker Akor Adams has expressed deep heartbreak following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the outcome as particularly painful for him as a proud Nigerian.

The 25-year-old took to X on Tuesday evening to share his frustration, writing: “As a Nigerian, nothing hurts more!” — a message that captured the emotional toll of the team’s agonising defeat to DR Congo in Rabat.

Adams had enjoyed a promising start to his international career after earning his first senior call-up in October 2025 for qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin, scoring on his debut as a substitute against Lesotho.

He continued his impact in Nigeria’s World Cup campaign, scoring the opener in the 4–1 semi-final victory over Gabonafter extra time.

However, his fourth appearance — the decisive play-off against DR Congo — ended in heartbreak.

Shoot-out agony after tense 1–1 draw

Adams replaced the injured Victor Osimhen at half-time as Nigeria pushed for control in a tense encounter.

Frank Onyeka had given Nigeria a third-minute lead, but DR Congo levelled through Elia Meschack in the 32nd minute. Despite chances on both sides, the match remained tied through extra time, forcing a penalty shoot-out.

Adams converted his kick with confidence, but misses from Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi handed DR Congo a 4–3 victory, ending Nigeria’s World Cup hopes.

NFF: ‘A moment of profound sadness’

The Nigeria Football Federation issued a statement to President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government, and the nation, describing the defeat as “a moment of profound sadness for Nigerian football.”

It acknowledged the overwhelming disappointment in the dressing room and thanked Nigerians for their unwavering support throughout the campaign.

According to the federation, football remains “a national language… a bridge across cultures… and a symbol of unity that binds over 200 million people as one family.”

AFCON Morocco 2025: A chance for redemption

With the World Cup dream over, Adams and the Super Eagles will now shift focus to the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025.

The NFF described the tournament as “an opportunity for healing, renewal, and demonstrating the resilience that has always defined Nigerian football.”
