The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has disclosed that compensation paid to passengers by airlines surged to N2.46 billion in the first seven months of 2025, marking a significant leap from N108.3 million in the same period of 2024 and N32.8 million in 2023.
The figures were released by the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, who said the milestone followed the regulator’s prolonged engagements with airlines and a nationwide sensitisation campaign with air travellers.
According to the report, hotel accommodation refunds under the provisions of Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations also rose to N6.08 million by July 2025, with verified reports from hotels in Abuja, Asaba, and Lagos.
Achimugu attributed the surge to greater adherence by airlines to the NCAA’s consumer protection framework, despite operational challenges in the aviation industry.
He described the development as one of the Authority’s proudest achievements in its 25-year history, adding that more passengers are now being protected than ever before.
“The NCAA will continue to safeguard the rights of passengers,” Achimugu pledged.
