In a historic move, the Governing Council of the University of Abuja—now renamed Yakubu Gowon University—has approved the promotion of 104 academic staff to professorial rank.
The announcement was made on Wednesday in Abuja through a statement by Dr. Habib Yakoob, Acting Director of Information and University Relations. The promotions include 58 new Professors and 46 Associate Professors, spanning a broad range of disciplines.
The promoted staff members come from various academic disciplines, including:
- Agriculture
- Animal Science
- Islamic Studies, History, and Ethics
- Clinical Sciences (Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Radiology, Ophthalmology)
- Theatre Arts
- Education (Social Sciences)
- Engineering (Civil, Chemical, Electrical)
- Pharmacology
- Statistics and Applied Mathematics
- Nursing and Allied Health Sciences
Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mathew Adamu, congratulated the newly promoted academics. He praised their dedication to scholarship, calling the promotions a “recognition of hard work, academic excellence, and commitment to the growth of the university.”
“This promotion is particularly remarkable because the number of staff elevated to professorial rank is the highest in the history of this university,” Prof. Adamu said. “It is a credit to the commitment of the Council, management, and the University community to reward excellence.”
He also highlighted the institution’s improved stability and assured that more achievements are on the horizon.
This latest promotion exercise is part of a renewed commitment to foster academic growth and maintain a timely and effective reward system at the university.
