Telecommunications operators in Nigeria have reported widespread disruptions in SIM-related services following a new directive from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
The operators, under the umbrella of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), said the disruptions stem from a mandated migration to a new identity verification platform.
In a statement jointly signed by ALTON Chairman, Gbenga Adebayo, and Publicity Secretary, Barr. Damian Udeh, the association said:“ALTON wishes to inform the general public, our valued subscribers, and all stakeholders of a temporary disruption affecting SIM-related services across all mobile networks in Nigeria.
“This disruption follows a recent directive from NIMC, mandating our Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) members to transition to a new identity verification platform.”
They explained that the ongoing migration has presented unforeseen technical challenges, affecting crucial services such as SIM registration, replacement, and Mobile Number Portability (MNP) across the country.
