NSIB, Asky Airlines Strengthen Ties to Boost Aviation Safety in West Africa

''We are moving away from a system where aviation rules are written in response to tragedy. Our focus is on building a framework grounded in science, data, and technology to stay ahead of threats. This shift enables us to detect risks before they escalate into incidents, spot trends before they become statistics, and prevent tomorrow’s accidents today. This approach requires open collaboration with key stakeholders, grounded in trust and knowledge exchange.'' - Captain Badeh Jr.

In a strategic move to advance aviation safety across the West African sub-region, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., Director General of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), paid a high-level visit to Mr. Esayas Woldemariam Hailu, Chief Executive Officer of Asky Airlines, at the airline’s headquarters in Lomé, Togo.

The meeting reflects a growing commitment to regional collaboration, transparency in accident investigations, and alignment with international safety standards. It also underscores the shared responsibility between regulatory bodies and airline operators in enhancing aviation outcomes.

Captain Badeh Jr. emphasized that the future of aviation in West Africa relies heavily on building trust and cooperation today.

“This visit is not just a gesture of goodwill — it’s a deliberate step toward building a network of trust, cooperation, and accountability in West African aviation,” he said.

The discussions focused on harmonizing safety practices, improving technical training, and aligning operational protocols with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. Badeh Jr. stressed the need to shift from reactive to proactive safety systems using data, technology, and early risk detection to prevent future incidents.

“We are moving away from rules written in response to tragedy,” he explained. “Our goal is to prevent tomorrow’s accidents today through collaboration and technology-driven insights.”

Mr. Hailu welcomed the NSIB team and reaffirmed Asky Airlines’ dedication to safety, transparency, and international best practices.

“We are honoured to host the Director General,” said Hailu. “Partnerships like this help us stay responsive and aligned with global standards.”

Both leaders expressed optimism about future cooperation. Key areas of interest include shared training programs, capacity building, and real-time information exchange to strengthen the regional aviation framework.

As West Africa grows into a key aviation hub, this engagement marks a forward-looking step toward integrated safety systems and sustainable oversight in the region.
