Federal Government Halts Sagamu-Iperu Road Project Over Poor Quality

Minister of Works orders urgent repairs and threatens major sanctions after inspecting slow and substandard work on critical Lagos-Ibadan Expressway segment.

The Federal Government has ordered an immediate stop to construction work on the 12-kilometre Sagamu-Iperu Road, near the Sagamu Interchange on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Senator Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works, gave the directive on Thursday during an inspection tour of federal road projects in Lagos and Ogun states.

The minister expressed strong dissatisfaction with both the pace and quality of the ongoing work. He instructed the contractor to halt further activity until key issues were addressed.

“The stone base used is unacceptable,” Umahi stated. “I am giving the contractor seven days to remove it and bring in the correct milling machine and proper stone mixture.”

He emphasized the urgency of the situation, adding that the contractor must accelerate work and ensure all ramps and retaining walls are up to standard.

Of particular concern to Umahi were signs of rusted reinforcement rods on several bridge piers along the route.

“That is very dangerous,” he warned. “If any of these should collapse, it will cost billions of Naira to rebuild. Right now, it will take much less to fix them. I am leaving my design head on-site to come up with a comprehensive plan and costing within seven days.”

The Federal Government plans to appeal to President Bola Tinubu for immediate intervention once the report is ready.
