The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his decisive action in addressing the long-standing dispute between the federal government and university staff unions.
On Wednesday, Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, announced that President Tinubu had approved a significant sum of N50 billion to clear outstanding earned allowances owed to both the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and non-academic staff across federal universities.
Reacting to the development, NANS, through its National Vice President on Inter-Campus and Gender Affairs, Akinbodunse Sileola Felicia, praised the president’s move, calling it “noble and unprecedented.” The statement, released Thursday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, acknowledged the president’s commitment to restoring harmony in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
According to Akinbodunse, students—being the primary beneficiaries of uninterrupted academic calendars—can now look forward to improved academic engagement and better performance from lecturers and administrative staff.
“This approval is a major milestone for the Tinubu-led administration,” she said. “It has further endeared the president to Nigerian students.”
She also highlighted the noticeable drop in ASUU strikes since the beginning of the Tinubu administration in 2023 and reaffirmed NANS’s support for ongoing reforms aimed at revitalising higher education in Nigeria.
NANS urged the president to continue implementing policies that promote educational development and ensure lasting stability in the sector.
