Women Protest in Rivers State, Demand Return of Governor Fubara and End to Emergency Rule

In a bold show of resistance, a group of women in Rivers State took to the streets of Port Harcourt on Friday morning to demand the reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and an immediate end to the emergency rule declared by the federal government. The women, dressed in black and waving placards with messages such as “We need our democracy restored”, “#BringBackFubara”, and “Obey the rule of law”, marched from various parts of the city to the Rivers State Government House. Their protest, which began at dawn, was peaceful but powerful, drawing attention from bystanders and media alike. Chanting solidarity songs, the protesters condemned what they called an unconstitutional political takeover. One of the women, seen in a widely circulated video on social media platform X, passionately declared, “We want Governor Fubara back!” This demonstration follows the March 18 declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu, citing ongoing political instability. As part of the emergency measures, Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and members of the state assembly were suspended, and retired naval chief Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as sole administrator. The protesters insisted that the removal of democratically elected officials was a violation of the rule of law and called on the federal government to restore constitutional governance in the state immediately.
